Well, for one thing, the 212s will ultimately play louder (more headroom) over a relatively equivalent bandwidth...from a box roughly half the size.

Also, the single-mag 212 will be easier to tame in the time domain.

On the other hand...

There's really no all-around "better" or "best". Only what's best for your application.

I'm imagining them in their own subenclosure in a larger sealed enclosure using 411 or 3154 for useable extension well into the bottom octave. It'd all fit in a package a tad smaller than a 620A or B box.

They would also make for the heart of a killer small portable PA, for solo or small 2 or 3 piece acts............... add a sub for slightly bigger apps. Their size would lend them to many monitoring apps in the SR world that need high output from a small package.

The price is really pretty cheap if you consider that you're getting Altec born sound quality in a woofer, large format driver, and horn complete with XO all in one package.

I wonder, in a near field or small room hi fi app, how far one could get away with pushing the XO point down?

3154'd be the best mate for ultimate output vs box size.

Or HT, anywhere a sub's assumed.

Given the size of the horn, you're not likely to get much lower without unloading the HF.
